@ricard Dear users of *this* instance. Please have patience. I'll probably do the upgrade from Mastodon 3.5 to 4.0 in two weeks. I did not do much rails stuff the last years, so I need some time getting accustomed to the procedures involved again.

Should we show the local timeline or the federated timeline for non-members clicking
toot.bike/public ?

And one more. The official cargo bike symbol from the Ministry of Transport as blue tick. :cargo:

And another one :btnps: Shortcut "btnps". This uses the cyclist from the NPS (National Park Service). It emphasizes on the rider, not the bike. Have fun.

OK, since everyone asked, I added a bike in the blue cloud by mashing up the original twitter bluetick SVG with VZ237 :bt: The sortcut is "bt".

@rdfhrn @reuters@newsie.social @adamdavidson Even more since this tick only works if both your Mastodon profile links to your web page (it's best to link to the imprint) and back from this web page to your Mastodon profile. You must have permissions to edit both. If one is missing, no green tick.

If you have the means, consider donating to the admin of your Mastodon instance. If you're on mastodon.lol, that's @nathan and his Patreon is patreon.com/mastodondotlol

If we want to build a lasting social network that's not at the mercy of the whims of billionaires, it'll take resources, and the least we can do is cover the finances while the admins are doing so much volunteer labor.

With great power comes greater responsibility. Even on such a small instance, it's obvious on seemingly marginal topics like "hashtag moderation". I always thought the technical aspect of running a small Mastodon instance aimed at 2000 users max would be the biggest thing. It's not. Opt-in hashtags, links and holding back toxic hashtags and links is. So, I'll approrach a few of you during the next days to help.

I love you all, but please be patient. Sleep well!

Some notes not from the machine room, but from the management office, especially regarding EU platform and competition law: Some commercial accounts are trickling in and I totally have no problems with it, since the two I'll mention here provide content over advertising. BUT: If you are a commercial entity, please get the green tick using the <a rel="me" href="..."> backlinks to your toot.bike profile, it makes it easier for everyone of us. 1/3

@kinderradfinder @lightwolfstudio Bonus2/3 for non German speakers. The English word "light" sounds like the German prefix "leit-" which means leading or here the wolf that leads the pack. So "Lightwolf" is the soundex ibm.com/docs/de/spss-modeler/s equivalent to "Leitwolf".

@kinderradfinder @lightwolfstudio Disclaimer: LBS' and affiliates don't pay. I just insist on the majority of the contents to be informational. Anyone spamming the instance with "best price offers" will be banned. So if you are a local bike shop searching a platform to tell about workshop life while being connected to the bike bubble, you are welcome to join! Bonus/3

@kinderradfinder Second one is the team of Felix Wolf building light bikes and thereby named @lightwolfstudio (aha, smart naming). They are also located in Saxony, close to the Czech border, so you'll see them use lot's of saxonian carbon and czech titanium in nice calm youtube videos for dreaming of your next bike. 3/3

PS: Christopher and Felix, both of you miss the green tick, give me a call or mail me to solve technical issues.

First commercial user is Christopher, he runs a one man business called Kinderradfinder which is basically marketing and affiliate for many kids bike brands. He did some math and database magic by asking nearly every kids' bike vendor on geometry, dumping it to a database that spits out matching bikes if you enter your childs' dimensions. You'll find him @ @kinderradfinder (maybe not much content since he is currently recovering from an injury from Berlin traffic) 2/3

1/4 A key thing I've learned about Mastodon: When you find your friends on here, don't just follow them — add them to a list!

If you follow a lot of accounts, your close friends' posts may not show up in your feed at a time you're logged on. Unlike FB or Twitter, Mastodon has no algorithm to resurface your friends' posts from hours or days ago.

Solution: Create a list called "Friends" and check it when you're on. This will ensure that you see what they posted while you were away. (cont'd)

Sometimes I am a bit stupid. I totally missed the IPv6 setup, so you might not be able to follow users on IPv6 only servers. This is a shame since especially cheap VM/container hosting often does not come with an IPv4 address. So I am cutting out some very niche communities. I'll fix this the next days, this will mean one or to reboots taking around 3 minutes each.
